WHAT TO DO IN ZAHARA
In addition to its beaches
EXPERIENCE THE CHARM OF THE VILLAGE
Palace of Las Pilas
Humble in appearance and not too well preserved el castillo de Zahara was built by the Dukes of Medina Sidonia to defend against pirates. Later it was also used to store fishing tools, preparation and preservation of tuna. Declared of Cultural Interest in 2004, it is a symbol for the town that is still waiting for the Ministry to do something for its conservation and maintenance. In the meantime, there are many activities that take place within its walls, such as, for example, the summer cinema, concerts, etc.
Food Market
Although in summer it is open every day, we like to go on Saturday mornings. The first thing to do is to go through the different stalls deciding what to buy, although we never miss the vegetables at the 1st stall on the left and the fishmonger at the 2nd stall on the right of Mariana also known as the Chito right at the other end of the market.
Of course it is mandatory to have a beer or two in the Abacería at the entrance with the locals. The ceiling was painted by a local artist with murals of tuna and underwater life which gives it a very special touch.
Concerts on the beach
One of the things to do in Zahara de los Atunes that you can not miss and a very important part of the character and personality of the town in summer. Every day first at sunset and then at night you have to go for example to the chiringuito (beach bar). La Luna, La Ola or El Pez Limón to have a drink sitting on the terrace or directly on the sand. Some of the artists that usually do not miss are for example: José el Francés, Raimundo Amador, Navajita Plateá among many others. A family atmosphere for all audiences with a very special summer flavor that you will want to enjoy every day.
Shopping in Zahara
Zahara is a small town so you won’t find big stores but you will find a handful of stores that will surprise you with love and style. Some of the ones we like the most are for example: Con Luz Propia where you will find women’s clothing and accessories.
Me Piace and Sotto Scala both near the Levante Apartments have very original things handmade by Mauro Basile a local artist. Agua Viva also very close by specializes in jewelry while lastly in Farah you will find women’s clothing, accessories and decorative items – there are many more, but it’s up to you to discover them!
Procession of the Virgen del Carmen
The Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of sailors is one of the most important festivals of any fishing village. Watching her procession is one of the things to do in Zahara de los Atunes that you should not miss. How many times have the people of the sea prayed to the Virgin, some to ask for good fishing and others seeking protection in the dangerous waters of the Strait. That is why they feel a special pride when carrying the Virgen del Carmen or «Star of the Seas» in procession to the beach where they walk barefoot through the sea and then, if the weather permits, in a boat followed by many boats playing the sirens.
Cows on the Beach
There are many good beaches in Spain, but there are not so many wild and almost untouched ones. Only in Zahara you can also find groups of happy cows sunbathing on the sand. Beautiful Retinta cows that alternate the fresh pastures of the area with the Bikini operation on the golden beaches of the area.
The same Retinta breed native to the area that will delight the most carnivorous in the spectacular Ruta del Retinto which is held in Zahara every year at the same time as the Jazz festival Jazzhara.
Summer Cinema
If you are wondering about things to do in Zahara with children, the summer cinema can give you a lot to do. With all the charm of the old village cinemas, with their plastic chairs, break in the middle of the movie to buy popcorn, etc. but within a historic enclosure of the fifteenth century in the center of town.
They usually program new movies of which there are always some for all audiences. Keep in mind that it is a good idea to arrive well in advance to be able to buy tickets.
MARKET OF la Muralla
At the beginning of each summer the esplanade of the wall will gradually fill with all kinds of stalls of jewelry, clothing and other items typical of hippy market. A perfect environment for a walk or a bite to eat because there will be food trucks and even a Moroccan tent that offers a good Cous-cous and which can only be entered barefoot which gives it a certain exotic touch.
Of course you will also find attractions and other things to do in Zahara with children, such as a bouncy castle, bumper cars, etc.
Walk to the Camarinal Lighthouse
Also called Torre Vieja (Old Tower) or Torre del Cabo de Gracia, the
faro de Camarinal was built as a watchtower in the 16th century to defend the area from pirates. Much later it was restored and enabled as a lighthouse and finally declared of Cultural Interest.
Located between the beach of the Alemanes and the beach of Cañuelo is a different thing to do in Zahara de los Atunes if one day you wake up with the desire to walk.
Search for the Green Ray
Few sunsets are as beautiful as those of Zahara. Comparable to those of Ibiza or Tanah Lot in Bali you will see how the sun sets behind Cape Trafalgar flooding the sky with incredible colors.
With patience and of course a good dose of luck you may be able to see the famous and mythical flash or Rayo Verde. A rather difficult to see atmospheric phenomenon that will keep your kids entertained and that they will remind you day after day until they get to see it.
Horseback riding on the beach
Surfing Course
If you want to learn how to surf or if you already surf and want to improve your skills the official surf school ZaharaSurf is your best option. All instructors are qualified as International Surf Instructors and lifeguards specializing in surf lifesaving.
Of course they have courses for all levels, both for children and for teenagers and adults.
visit the Iglesia del Carmen
Unlike other churches with their ostentatious decorations, this one is tiny, humble and cozy.
Recently restored, its whitish walls still show traces of its centuries-old past as a salt warehouse for preserving tuna. One of the most precious treasures of the town that you should not miss even if you are not entirely religious. If you decide to attend Sunday mass you will see that the parish priest is a real charmer. With a friendly and affable tone, he is always close to the people of the village. As it should be.

Something different to do in Zahara de los Atunes
Walking the beaches of Zahara looking for little ears is a typical pastime of the town. Something shared by the people of Zahara as well as by those from outside. It’s like eating pipes and once you start you can’t stop. At first it is difficult to recognize them and it is not uncommon to return home empty but over time, as with everything, you gain skill. It is common to see in the houses, bars and restaurants of the town bottles and carafes full to overflowing that surely will have taken years to fill.
